HOW DO YOU UPGRADE YOUR DIAMOND?
For most people
who married many years ago, they will end up to the point where the size of the
center stone no longer suits their satisfaction. Every woman wants a bigger
diamond so why not upgrade? There are tips and tricks; however, one must be
aware of in order to a get bigger or better quality diamond for the right deal!
Prices for Trade In can
be Deceiving
Most jewelry stores
give a good offer as trade in for your diamond. They will even accept your
diamond for the amount that you paid originally just to get done with the
exchange. This may look so attractive but you must be very cautious in getting
the deal.
Let's say you have a
0.60ct Diamond H color VS2 clarity and you wish to trade it in for a 1.25ct
Diamond of the same color and clarity. The jeweler would offer you $2000 (the
amount that you originally paid for the old diamond) towards the 1.25ct Diamond
with the retail price of $5000, leaving you a balance of $2500. What is catchy
here is that the jeweler did not inform you that the 1.25ct Diamond is on sale
for 40% off (even without the trade in). Hence, the upgrade affects your
savings shelling out more money instead of getting the discounted price.
Factors to Consider in
Upgrading A Diamond
The
Size
As you plan to upgrade
your diamond you must get a bigger size noticeable enough against your old
diamond. If you have a 0.50ct Diamond, consider getting a 1.00ct Diamond in
order to see and enjoy the upgrade and even your friends can notice that too!
The
Millimeter
Even if a diamond is
0.25 bigger than the other, both might look the same in size. The size
difference is magnified by the actual width of the diamond known as millimeter
size (mm). One should take note that most of the stones being sold in the
market are spready (stone that is thin and narrow). In effect this kind of
stone faces up much bigger than they actually are. Say, a 1.00ct Round Diamond
could look like 1.30ct due to the way it is cut and the millimeter size as
well.

The
Clarity
Upgrading the diamond
for the sake of clarity is just a waste of time and money because it not going
to be visible with the naked eye. A VVS Diamond and VS Diamond would look very
similar. So why spend more for something that is not visible?
The
Color
When you upgrade your
diamond for a bigger size, you must also consider upgrading the color. The
bigger the size of a diamond the more noticeable the color will be. Comparing
between a 0.60ct Diamond color I and a 1.00ct Diamond color J, the color
difference would be very obvious showing that the latter is more inferior, more
yellow than the former.
The
Setting
You should also be
ready in changing your ring as the bigger size of the new diamond might not be
secured to be set in the old ring. A top heavy diamond could make the head of
the ring lean to the side as there is more weight now on the top part of the
ring. The mounting may have to be adjusted by setting the diamond deeper preventing
the stone to fall out, or the whole mounting itself has to be changed. Do not
ever compromise the safety of your precious diamond for a few hundred dollars
setting.
Price
Point
Diamond jewelers can
usually offer the upgrades in 2 ways:
1) Trade In Price
towards Retails Price of a New Diamond
2) Sale Price of your
Diamond towards Sale Price of Another Stone.
Some dealers will
provide both a Sale Price and a Trade In Price, but remember that it is NOT the
fullest amount of each. It's all up to you to identify which deal has the
better price depending on your capacity to pay the amount difference.
