WHY IDEAL CUT IS IMPORTANT?
The Importance of Cut
A lot people looking to buy a new
diamond are so often confused between diamond cut and diamond shape especially
when a regular person hear a diamond expert referring to shapes as if they were
a type of cut. Diamond cuts matter greatly! It affects the sparkle of a
diamond. More often than not, buyers tend to give much weight on the 3 of the 4
C's (Carat, Color and Clarity) and forget the importance of "4th C",
the Cut grade.
A diamond's cut grade pertains to how
well a diamond is cut or proportioned. It refers to the symmetry or how
symmetrical its sections are. Symmetry & proportions play a crucial role in
allowing a diamond to have a proper reflection of light which means that the light entering from any direction to
be totally reflected through the top and dispersed into a gorgeous display of
color. If the symmetry, proportions and polish are made perfectly, the diamond
will show an excellent sparkle and likely be graded as "Ideal Cut
Grade".
In the past, little importance was
given to the quality of cut of a diamond. Grading was primarily based on color
and clarity. But in the beginning of the 20th century, when optical brilliance
was studied further, the forms of diamond cuts developed through trial and
error. Year 1910 came when the calculations have been applied which consider
the physical and optical properties of a diamond such as dispersion, light refraction and
hardness in order to have a maximum brilliance through an accurate proportions
and symmetry. Such style of cut has underwent the longest and highest degree of
development as it started long ago as
the first century B.C, and only in the 20th century did it arrive in full
maturity in the appearance and characteristics of a round brilliant cut
diamond.
Ideal Diamond Cut
Ideal cut diamonds appear the most
brilliant where the weight of the diamond is proportional. This means that the
top and bottom parts of the stone are very near to the same weight. And with
this balanced weight the facets can be aligned (cut) to reflect the light
perfectly coming in right back up the top part of the diamond giving a
sparkling or fiery look. The factors which contribute to the proportions are girdle diameter, table diameter, total depth, crown
height, thickness of the girdle, pavilion depth, angle of the crown facets to
the plane of the girdle, and angle of the pavilion facets to the plane of the
girdle. The more the
cutter deviates from the mathematically correct proportions, the more the
brilliance is compromised, and the lower is the quality of the cut. But a
slight deviation from precise standards does not bring any loss of brilliance
to be examined by a specialist.
Finding an ideal cut grade to a very
good cut grade diamond is more significant aspect than any other
characteristics of the diamond grading process. All diamond certificates should
have a cut grade and we should give a high regard on it.
