There are several reasons why most women say that they would never propose to their boyfriend. In fact, a survey of 277 male and female college students depicted that not only do most men and women want the man to propose, but none actually wanted the women to propose. Only a few women said they might consider proposing to their boyfriends. Most of these college students said the reasoning behind their preference was tradition, while others said that it “emasculates” the man.

While many think that proposing marriage is a man’s job and that taking that away from them essentially emasculates them, the ball is really in the women’s court. They are the ones who say yes or no. Yet, if a man feels emasculated by a woman saying she want to spend the rest of her life with him, then how equal would the perspective marriage be?

Why Women Should Propose

Gender roles are exactly that. Just because it is a man’s role to propose marriage to a woman, does not mean that that is the way it should be. Just like in any situation where marriage is on the table, both the man and woman should be on the same page about where their relationship id heading. If you, as a woman, believe that you and your man are ready to take the next step, you have just as much right to propose to him as he does to you.
